What to Wear in Geneva: A Season-by-Season Guide for Men

How Geneva dresses, and what to pack for winter's bise, changeable spring, lakeside summers and golden autumns.

What to Wear in Geneva: A Season-by-Season Guide for Men

Geneva dresses well but quietly. It is a city of bankers, diplomats and people who spend their weekends in the mountains, so the style sits somewhere between smart and outdoorsy. Lémanoir is named after the lake there, Lac Léman, and the city shapes everything we make. Here is what to pack for each season.

The Geneva look in one sentence

Good fabrics, neutral colours, nothing flashy, and always something warm enough for the wind off the lake.

Winter (December to February)

Geneva winters are cold and grey rather than snowy, usually hovering around freezing. The real issue is the bise, a cold north wind that blows across the lake and makes it feel much colder than the thermometer says.

  • A down jacket that does not look like a ski jacket. Our knit down jacket pairs a quilted down front with wool-knit sleeves, so it works in town.
  • A thick knit underneath, such as a crewneck or roll neck.
  • Wool trousers, not thin chinos.
  • Leather boots or suede shoes with a grippy sole for wet cobbles.
  • A scarf. Locals wear one from November on.

Spring (March to May)

Changeable: sunny and mild one day, cold rain the next. Layers are everything.

  • An overshirt is the perfect spring layer. Try a houndstooth wool overshirt over a tee or a light knit.
  • A knit polo for warmer afternoons.
  • A light rain-ready jacket in your bag.

Summer (June to August)

Warm and bright, often in the high twenties. Life moves to the lake: swimming at the Bains des Pâquis, drinks on the quais, boats on the water.

  • Heavy cotton tees that do not cling in the heat, like our Genève 18h tee.
  • Linen or light cotton trousers and shorts in stone or white.
  • Boat shoes or clean leather sneakers.
  • Good sunglasses for the glare off the water. See the Low Rider.

Autumn (September to November)

Many people's favourite season in Geneva: crisp mornings, golden plane trees along the quais and the first snow on the mountains you can see from the city.

  • Suede, flannel and corduroy come out.
  • A knit over the shoulders for evenings.
  • Your first wool layer by October.

What not to wear

Geneva is not a place for loud logos or obvious designer pieces. People notice good clothes, but they notice them quietly. Athletic wear is for the mountains, not the old town.

If you are going to the mountains

Many weekends in Geneva end in the Alps. The ski resorts are a short drive away, so pack one chunky sweater and something for après-ski. We wrote a separate guide on what to wear après-ski.
